NFL Concussion Protocol Changes

Here is a link to a NY Times article of some of the new NFL concussion protocol changes that are to be implemented. With the recent rash of head injuries to star players it has helped push these changes along much faster.

Unfortunately, I agree with the part of the article that more players may choose to hide symptoms from team and independent doctors that will be used. In the future with the advance of technology maybe handheld devices can be used on the sideline that measure normal and abnormal brain activity. As much as I love watching and cheering for the NFL I have great concern for the head injury issues. As a father, friend, uncle and human I know that the more truth that comes out about the effects of injuries to the brain no matter how minor will actually be better for the game in the long run, but more importantly for those who play it with love and passion.

Current concussion aftercare protocol is not enough, players need to be evaluated prior to playing. A head and neck evaluation in relation to jaw cartilage alignment/balance used by the N.E.Patriots, has now been recognized by the Department of Defense. Parents at all levels must educate themselves about a corrective orthodontic procedure documented in a medical journal publication to help reduce concussion from blows to the jaw. Helmets are not the only solution and common tooth protecting mouth guards do not identify such defects in the cartilage structure. Until this level of care is implemented into the standard of protocting our athletes and soldiers, concussion rates will not change. www.mahercor.com
